Hello to all the theoretical people from One Eighteen: Migration! This episode is not a typical episode. If you go back in the feed or check the Categories over there on the right, you can hear some of the other things you'll find here: mostly fiction.

It's been far too long since I've posted any new fiction here (or anywhere, really) and all the stories I have almost-finished are a) not finished, and b) too long to finish quickly and post tonight.

Given that, I figured I'd start something new, officially. Alarin has done something similar, posting unfinished bits of story to have a record of it, but it hasn't had its own category...

This is a scene that's been bouncing around my head for months, and is actually the reason I decided to tie The Wayferer in with Hammer & Axe & Anne.

Inspired by the Heather Alexander tune "Healing Chant" off the Merlin's Descendants album.

It contains spoilers for what will happen to my Mystic Frontiers gang (Hammer, Axe, Wayfarer) so don't read it if you don't want spoilers for something that will be in a longer story sometime between "soon" and "later."

Also, there's singing.</itunes:summary>

The editing on this one is sub par. I apologize for that, but decided to put it up anyway because I know if I didn't, it would sit on my hard drive for another month before I got back to it.

I'll try to get the next Character Focus out next week.

And speaking of next week, Friday, April 4, I'm going to be at the downtown Barnes and Noble for Scott Sigler's INFECTED book signing. If you're there, feel free to say hi. I'll be the guy in the bowler (possibly a fedora if the bowler doesn't arrive on time) with a victorian beard style

<itunes:summary>Hooray! Finally an episode in 2008. This was originally going to be a segment in What Inspires You, but when I realized it account for about half of the almost two hour recording, I decided it would be its own show.

This is the Character Focus show, where Alarin and I talk about a specific character, his/her origins, and some stories of the character's development. And other random things.

A few words of warning: There is coarse language, but not spoken in a mean spirited or hateful way, I don't think ... Also, it's only lightly edited. After having this file for over a month and barely touching it, I decided to just post it and be done with it. If anyone complains, I'll probably go back and edit it. Be glad I took out the part where I stepped away to get the laptop's power cord, and Alarin started singing "Manah Manah" ;)

Music is the song "Rain" by Afternights. Find their music on Kam's web page: haoma.neonphog.com

<itunes:summary>The rambling babble in the show explains more about the story. Suffice it to say, this is part one of another story set in Mystic Frontiers, the Alternian fantasy setting.

This story will eventually become part of the Wayfarer's story. I could claim they were always going to be the same story, but that's simply not true. Wayfarer was started because someone asked me to write a fantasy story. Hammer and Axe started because I liked the phrase "Hammer and Axe" and as I walked to lunch one day, my ankles were popping and my elbows cracked as I stretched, and I thought "I'm gettin old ..." which became Hammer's first line.

Some links before I say more about the story:
Children of the Gods - mentioned in the outro babble as part of why this episode has been delayed. I have two short lines in Episode 8, and a bigger part in the (currently) upcoming Episodes 9 and 9.5AlterniaComics.com - New and improved! And still a work in progress ... But if I link back there from here, maybe I can make the google bot dizzy. ;) (since the alterniacomics page links to here..)

Spoiler Alert!
For anyone familiar with Alternia, Anne is actually Rianne the Explorer, now a retired Bard well in to her 90s. Rianne is MyF's incarnation of Cathy Travis, a quasi-pan-dimensional human. She can't cross the dimensional boundary, but she can access information her otherselves know, usually thinking it's fiction and writing and publishing it as such.

This isn't really important except to say that Rianne is using minions to continue her explorations because, while her mind is still sharp as a tack and curious as ever, her body has become frail and tired.

<itunes:summary>Can it be? Has Christmas come early this year? Is the Karak Speaks True hiatus finally over?!

Yes, at long last, I have returned to podcasting. Partly because I couldn't let Steve over at Geek Cred catch up to me in episode numbers... I mean, he's already up to Episode 15! But mostly because work has finally slowed down again. The company was "right sized" a few months back, then, surprise! we got a bunch of business and suddenly we have work enough for most of the people that were let go, but we're not hiring them back. The animators got hit hardest. From seven down to three, and they were doing the work of six for a while.

Cian over at View From The Quad asked for some listener content, so I started a story that begins with his death, and features zombies. The first bit of it is in VFTQ #72 and the rest will be here on Halloween.

That's right. Two episodes in one month!

In this episode... Em goes under the knife, Leff gets angry at Varrow, and Varrow finds out a little more about Em's past.

<itunes:summary>It's been another two weeks. You know what that means: time for another KarakSpeaksTrue episode!

This time, as mentioned in the title bar, it's another chapter of Optinomicon. Kind of a short one. Only two pages, this episode clocks in just over ten minutes long.

Something different this time around. All of the spoken parts were recorded live, in one take. The only post production was to add in the intro music, outro music and bumpers. And blanking a moment when I cleared my throat (to create a nice spike in Audacity so I knew where to put the bump)

I think it turned out reasonably well... at least as well as Cory Doctorow's readings of his novella-in-progress There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow/Now is the Best Time of Your Life

If you think it's crap and want me to go back to the old way, editing out pauses, slip ups and retakes, let me know!

And so Rak can stop nagging me, I present the fuzzy little bear, as drawn by Dan Vann

No Optinomicon this week, sorry. Instead you get a short I've written called Coma, Seizure, Death, inspired by remix79.

There's also a second story written by my friend Kadell called Immortal and in Love. It's meant to be a spoken story, told by a story teller around a camp fire or in front of the hearth. I'm not sure I managed it in quite that style, but it came out well I think.

Outro music this time is Folky Song, by Sushi Hours. They do have a myspace page, but Kam said it's not very good and I probably shouldn't link it. So ... good luck finding the song. ;) If you do like the music, let me know. I can pass it along to Kam.

As I mention in the babble at the end, tomorrow morning I'm on a plane to Chicago for Anime Central. It will be awesome.

You can expect more surprise internet celebrity introductions to the show ("Hi, this is [name] from [comic or other thing] and you're listening to Karak Speaks True!")

In this episode, we meet three or four (or eight) new characters, but by the end it's clear only two are going to carry forward into further chapters. One is probably dead. I feel a bit like Sigler, introducing a character just to kill it off in the same chapter.

We meet two hackers: Varrow and her young protégé Bobby. Bobby found himself isolated, stuck in cyberspace, unable to simply log out, after getting too near a large corporation's data node and being attacked by their ICE. Varrow decided to use this as an opportunity to test Bobby's skill. Since he had managed to get a signal out to her already, it shouldn't be hard for him to get himself out. She started a slow hack that would have him out in two days, but warned that he would receive a failing grade if her hack saved him.
